WASHINGTON, DC -- Congressman Mike Michaud (ME-02), Ranking Member of the House Veterans' Affairs Committee, reacted to the release of new studies today that examine chemical exposure and Gulf War Illness.

"The announcement of these findings is encouraging news to the veterans who have endured over 20 years of inconclusive research into Gulf War Illness and ineffective treatments," said Michaud. "These studies provide critical new insights and represent a light at the end of a long tunnel for those who served in the Gulf War. Moving forward, our priority must be making sure veterans that were exposed get the care and benefits they deserve. I look forward to working with Chairman Miller and the VA toward this goal."

Last year, Michaud worked to pass an appropriations amendment into law that secured a $10 million budget for the Department of Defense Gulf War Veterans Illnesses Research Program, which will help improve research into treatments and live up to the recommendations of a landmark report of the Institute of Medicine that called for a major national research effort to identify treatments.
