Sen. Hutchison Appaluds GWI Research Findings, Calls for Effective Treatments, Prevention

PRESS RELEASE:  Senator Hutchison Notes Findings on Study of Gulf War Syndrome

(Washington, D.C.) - Two new scientific studies were released Thursday which may reveal a direct cause and effect for Gulf War Syndrome (GWS) among many veterans who fought during the 1991 conflict to end the Iraqi occupation of Kuwait.

The study, paid for in part through federal funding secured by Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, found GWS may be linked to a massive chemical weapons fallout cloud, created by bombing that destroyed sarin gas munitions storage sites during the early stages of the air campaign against Iraq.

Senator Hutchison issued the following statement:

"I want to congratulate Dr. Robert Haley of the University of Texas, Southwestern Medical Center and Veterans Advocate James Tuite for their steadfast pursuit for answers behind the mystery of Gulf War Syndrome. Despite repeated attempts to dissuade Dr. Haley from further research to address the debilitating symptoms of the returning veterans from the Gulf War, he never gave up.

"Ross Perot should also be commended for being among the first to put up private funding to help pay for the initial studies.

"Now that we know the probable cause of GWS, we need to find effective treatments. I also call on the Department of Defense to study these findings to protect against chemical weapons fallout in future conflicts."
